Shining Rock Wilderness
March 24-26, 2017

Troop 1 is headed to the Shining Rock wilderness area the weekend of March 24-26 for a trip like we have never done before. This is a great area for hiking and backpacking. You may view photos of the area from our 2014 trip on SmugMug.

We will be camping at Camp Daniel Boone on Friday and Saturday night. This is a large scout camp we attended in 2006 and has very nice facilities.

On Saturday morning, we will shuttle to the Art Loeb trail head at Black Balsam and hike about a 12 mile trip to include Tenant Mountain and Shining Rock where you will have the opportunity to take in views that are out of this world. We will also plan to have a picnic lunch on top of the Shining Rock. Instead of turning around and heading back to Black Balsam we will continue on with the Art Loeb trail which will take us right to our campsite at Camp Daniel Boone.

All meals except Saturday lunch on the trail will be covered by the troop so you will need to bring that. Chef Mullen and team have some big plans including that Troop 1 favorite called a rib-eye to celebrate a successful trip for Saturday night.

You will also need a day pack (book bag type) for the hike on Saturday to carry your lunch, water, and clothing layers.

We will plan to leave the scout hut Friday afternoon at 4:00 traveling by church bus. We should return to the scout hut on Sunday about noon. Please register for this trip by the March 21st scout meeting. There will be a $30 fee for everyone.
