William Carrington Edmunds, Sr. was born September 12, 1938, in Florence, South Carolina, and earned his Eagle Scout rank in Troop 1 as a teenager, remaining a lifelong member of The Episcopal Church of the Advent. He graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1956 and attended Clemson University and Wofford College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order.
In 1961 he married Jo Ann Hill and began his career at Greenwald’s Men’s Clothing Store in downtown Spartanburg. He later worked with Grier & Company and then Palm Beach Men’s Clothing as Southeast Regional Sales Director. He then moved into real estate with BuCar Properties and later Edmunds & Company, before joining Johnson Development Associates in 1987.
Over his 27-year career at Johnson Development, he oversaw leasing for the company’s retail centers, helping bring The Fresh Market grocery store to Spartanburg and redeveloping the former Crystal Springs Apartments into the Carrington subdivision, named in his honor.
He retired in 2014 and died February 1, 2024, preceded in death by Jo Ann, his wife of 61 years, and survived by his three children, William Carrington Edmunds, Jr., Sarah Hillary Edmunds, and Coleman Marks Edmunds.
