John Adams Hodge

Eagle Scout: July 1969

John Adams Hodge grew up in Spartanburg, the son of surgeon Dr. G. B. Hodge and Katie Adams Hodge. He became a Troop 1 Eagle Scout in July of 1969.

Hodge earned a B.S. in geology from Duke University in 1977, followed by an M.S. in marine science and geology from the University of South Carolina in 1981 and a J.D. from USC in 1983. In 2006, he completed a certificate in planetary geology at Birkbeck College, University of London.

He has practiced environmental law for more than thirty-five years and aviation law for more than thirty, bringing an unusual combination of scientific and legal training to both — he is a Registered Professional Geologist as well as a member of the South Carolina Bar, and served as staff counsel and hearing officer for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. He is a retired airline pilot and flight instructor and remains an active pilot. He has taught graduate coursework in environmental regulations and planning at the University of South Carolina.

Hodge is a Fellow of The Explorers Club and of the Royal Geographical Society, a NASA Solar System Ambassador who speaks publicly on planetary science, and a co-investigator on the Lake Murray B-25 Rescue Project featured on The History Channel. In 2008, he received the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor.
