John Toliver Reel is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Tod Rainsford Reel of Spartanburg. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout on January 8, 2008. His brother, Tod Rainsford Reel Jr., also earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
For his Eagle project, John cleared the Chinquapin Trail and placed picnic tables throughout the area. When his Eagle was reported, he was a student at Spartanburg Day School and a member of the cross country and tennis teams. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a mission trip volunteer, and he belonged to the Order of the Arrow and had earned the Bronze Palm. He later graduated from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science in physics in 2015, and earned a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from Clemson University.
