jocassee2013

The October backpacking trip take us to The Jocasse lake Foothills trail area.  This area is known as the Big Blue Wall or Blue Ridge Escarpment as the 2000 ft.  NC elevation quickly drops to the Jocasse lake area in SC.  Spectacular waterfalls are everywhere and the 76 mile Foothills trail snakes back and forth across the SC/NC state line.    Historically, since the steep slopes in the area form a natural coral, the Cherokee Indians and Civil War hideouts referred to the area as the “Horsepasture.”

All along the Foothills trail there are amazing views of Lake Jocasse and the dark corners of SC.  This trip will be a day hiking trip for the first years and an over night backpacking trip for the older scouts.  Hiking in this area is moderate to strenuous so proper footwear is recommended.
