Troop 1 has a special “summer surprise” trip in store that is sure to cure the summer doldrums as we will head to the Charlotte area for a three night extravaganza “scouting style” with plans for our scouts to earn both the Kayaking and Wilderness Survival Merit Badges.
Plans are to head out on Thursday afternoon (leave the scout hut at 1:00 pm) with our sights set on the McDowell Nature Preserve which will be our home base for the next three nights. Scouts who have not earned the Wilderness Survival badge will then build their shelters they will sleep in that night with help from the staff of the Nature Preserve. First thing Friday morning it will be off to the nearby US National Whitewater Center where an All Sports Pass will give us a full day of activity including whitewater rafting , zip lines and Flatwater Sports on the Catawba River. We will then head out Saturday morning for a half day mountain biking at the Whitewater Center with the afternoon devoted to finishing up Wilderness Survival Requirements.
Sunday morning we will then head back to the Whitewater Center for a kayak roll clinic where scouts will earn the Kayaking Merit Badge and learn the basics of the kayak roll from their professional staff with a 3:1 student instructor ratio. The instructors will work with you to establish the best style of roll and ensure that you can safely control a boat in Class II whitewater. Scouts that were on this trip two years ago will be able to take a more advanced kayak instruction this time.
The fee for this trip is $195 (adults $135) and includes all meals from Thursday Supper through Sunday Lunch, camping accommodations, merit badge instruction, an All Sports Pass at the whitewater center, mountain bike rental, and the kayaking instructional clinic.
Please register for this trip by Tuesday, June 24th so we may lock all the necessary reservations.
