ABOUT THE TRIP
Get ready for an incredible adventure! Our troop will be tackling one of the most spectacular hikes in the North Carolina mountains – an 11.7-mile point-to-point traverse through the Shining Rock Wilderness along the Art Loeb Trail. CAMPING – CAMP DANIEL BOONE
We’ll be camping Friday and Saturday night at the Catawba campsite at Camp Daniel Boone – a large scout camp with great facilities that we last visited back in 2006. Adirondack shelters are available (similar to Ho Non Wah), but you’re welcome to bring a tent or ENO if you prefer.

SATURDAY HIKE – THE MAIN EVENT
We’ll shuttle to the Art Loeb trailhead at the Mountain-to-Sea intersection and tackle an incredible ~12-mile hike passing over Black Balsam Knob, Tennent Mountain, and all the way to Shining Rock – a stunning white quartzite summit with panoramic views in every direction! We’ll stop at the top of Shining Rock for lunch before continuing on the Art Loeb trail back to Camp Daniel Boone. Point-to-point, no backtracking, all adventure!

MEALS
Scouts need to provide their own food for Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, Saturday lunch, and Sunday breakfast. Troop leaders will cook on Saturday night for the boys returning from the hike. Any Scouts looking to complete First Class cooking requirements need to let Tim Satterfield know.

WHAT TO PACK

  • Hiking clothes, hiking shoes, and socks
  • Outerwear – jacket, gloves, warm headgear, and raingear
  • Water bottle (will need 2 liters of capacity for the hike)
  • Day pack for the hike to hold your water, snacks, lunch, and raingear
  • Normal camping gear – tent or hammock, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stove, flashlight, etc.
