Ned Gwathmey was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Edward M. Gwathmey; his father was president of Converse College from 1933 to 1955. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout on May 22, 1952. He received the award at a special service at the Church of the Advent on June 1, 1952, along with fellow Troop 1 Scouts Harry Elliott DePass III and Carrington Edmunds.
